Brief History of Political Advertising in the U.S.Brief History of Political Advertising in the U.S.Anyone who has been in the United States during the run-up to a presidential election will know all about political advertising. To say it bombards TV viewers, radio listeners, internet users, and anyone who sees a billboard would be a vast understatement. The amount of money spent on political advertising grows every year, with an estimated $9.8 billion spent in the 2016 election year. Television Changed Everything It was the dawn of television that changed the way politicians reached their audiences. Before that, it was all about getting out and about, meeting the voters, holding town-hall debates and shaking hands. In fact, in 1948 Harry S. Truman covered over 31,000 miles in America, shaking over half a million hands. That was quite the achievement back then, but it would be astonishing today. No candidate would ever put that kind of a commitment into the meet-and-greet when ad vertising can do a far mora effective job. Presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first politician to really take advantage of TV, creating more than three dozen 20-second television spots. They were filmed in one day at Radio City Music Hall, where visitors asked questions that were were spliced into separate shots of Eisenhower answering them (as though the viewers were asking him directly) in his trademarked no bull way. These questions were split into ads, and the campaign Eisenhower Answers America ran. The campaign was credited with helping Eisenhower win the election. TV Ads and Debates After Eisenhower, the power of television could not be doubted. Nixons television addresses during his presidential campaign, covering the Cold War and government corruption, were very powerful. However, John F. Kennedy was a man who was born to be on camera and created more than 200 television ads in his run for the White House. Their televised debate is seen as a watershed i n political campaigning. While Kennedy was at ease on camera, looking slick and confident, Nixon was fidgety on camera, had sweat on his brow and looked troubled. Ironically, when the debates were televised, people thought Kennedy was the clear winner, while those listening on the radio thought the opposite. The Rise of Negative TV Campaigning Lyndon B. Johnson ran one of the most controversial ads in political advertising history. Entitled The Daisy Girl, it showed a young girl playing he loves me, he loves me not and when she plucked the last petal, a voice counted down to a nuclear explosion. The tagline because the stakes are too high for you to stay at home is believed to have sealed Johnsons victory over opponent Barry Goldwater. In the decades that followed, and up to the present day, more political campaigns have gone negative. And even though voters claim not to like attack ads, statistics show ansicht ads are effective. Political Advertising Reaches New Media Its fair to say that Bill Clinton was the first presidential candidate to effectively use more of the non-traditional forms of a political ad. Rather than run a campaign comprised solely of TV spots, radio ads, and billboards, he spread his reach much wider. He would appear on daytime TV talk shows and find his way onto channels like MTV. This grabbed the attention of younger voters. But when it comes to modern political advertising, Barack Obama changed the game. Although he used traditional media outlets and ran some negative spots, his campaign was based on a positive message hope. And, he used the internet and guerrilla advertising successfully. Artist Shepard Fairey created an iconic poster that was seen across America. Obamas use of modern methods, plus his youth and charm, upstaged his much older, traditional Republican opponent, John McCain. 2016s Historic Battle of the Bizarre In what many considered a surprising result, candidate Donald Trump was successful in defeating Hillary Clinton to win the 2016 presidential election. One thing is for certain 2016 was a game-changer with President Trumps caustic rhetoric giving his campaign millions of dollars in earned media without spending a dime. And for better or worse, Trumps use of Twitter as a means of reaching voters proved effective.

An interview is an opportunity for both you and the employer to decide whether or not you are a good fit. Here is a step-by-step description of a typical interview, with details on what to expect throughout the process. The Pre-interview Phase Before going to the interview, you will have already completed a number of steps in the job application process this is known as the pre-interview phase. During this phase, you will have sent a cover letter, resume, and any other required application materials to the hiring manager. You even may have had a phone interview with the manager before being invited in for an in-person interview. Thus, before even walking into the interview, the hiring manager knows a little bit about your background and qualifications. You should feel confident you were invited to have an interview because the manager thinks you could be a good fit for the company The Interview Phase The Beginning Your interview may take place at your high school or college, but generally it will take place at the companys office. Once you arrive, you may be asked (by a secretary or other employee) to wait until the hiring manager is ready to see you. Most interviews are one-on-one interviews with the manager or supervisor with whom you would be working fruchtwein closely at the company. Occasionally, you will interview with a human resources employee who conducts the companys hiring processes. The Interview Phase Types of Questions The interview will likely take place in the managers office. She may begin with information about her job or the company or engage you in small talk (questions about your commute, etc.), but the bulk of the interview will be specific questions that assess w hether or not you will be a good fit for the company. No interview will be the exact saatkorn each interviewer will ask slightly different questions. However, most interviewers ask questions to assess both your general behavior and skills. Below are a few types of questions that you can expect to come across most interviewers will ask some of each type of question. Verification Questions These questions will require you to provide objective information about yourself, such as your GPA, your major, the number of years you spent at your last job, etc. The interviewer may already know some of these answers and is therefore simply checking the facts on your resume.Competency/Behavioral Questions A behavioral question is one in which the interviewer asks you to describe a past situation when you demonstrated a particular quality. These questions indicate how you may handle similar situations at a new job. An example of a behavioral question is, Describe the toughest challenge you faced a t your last job. How did you handle it? Situational Questions A situational question is one in which the interviewer describes a hypothetical situation and the interviewee must explain how she would handle it or has handled it in the past. With this type of question, the interviewer wants to know how you will handle situations that may arise in the workplace. An example of a situational question is, What would you do if two members of your team had a conflict that affected your productivity?Case Interview Questions You will likely only encounter case interview questions if you are applying for a management consulting or investment banking position. In case interview questions, the employer gives the employee a business scenario and asks the interviewee how he would handle the situation. Sometimes these are questions about actual business situations, but other times, they are brain teasers that hold no direct relevance to the job (How many gas stations are there in Europe?). Case int erview questions allow interviewees to demonstrate their analytical ability and problem solving skills. Other Types of Interviews Group Interviews While this article depicts a traditional interview between one hiring manager and one interviewee, there are other types of interviews which you may encounter. Below are some common examples. Group Interviews One type of group interview you may encounter is an interview in which one hiring manager interviews you and other applicants simultaneously. In this scenario, the interviewer may ask you each to answer the same questions, or ask each of you different questions. Sometimes (particularly if you are being asked case interview questions), you will solve hypothetical problems as a team. Another type of group interview is one in which you are asked questions by multiple interviewers. Either the interviewers will form a panel and take turns asking you questions, or you will meet with each one at a time. Whether or not you are in a grou p interview, your interview questions will likely remain a mix of verification, behavioral, and situational questions. The Interview Phase After the Questions The interviewer may ask questions for anywhere from half an hour to an hour or more. Afterward, she will likely ask you if you have any questions for her. This is your opportunity to ask questions about the company and/or the position itself. It also gives you another chance to sell yourself to the interviewer. Again, the interview is your chance to see if the job is a good fit for you, so feel comfortable asking questions. After the questions phase of the interview, the hiring manager may give you a tour of the office and even introduce you to other employees. A tour will provide you with an opportunity to meet your potential coworkers and assess the atmosphere of the office. While this is typically the end of the interview, some interviews contain additional components for example, you may be asked to give a presentation to the hiring manager or a staff panel. However, if this is the case, you will have been told about this in advance, and will have had time to prepare. Upon concluding the interview, do not expect the hiring manager to tell you definitively whether or not you have the job. However, if she has not already told you when you will hear back with an answer, feel free to ask her before you leave. The Post Interview Phase The next stage in the job application process, the post-interview phase, takes place in the days following the interview. This is the time when the hiring manager (and anyone else involved in the hiring process) decides whether or not you are the best fit for the position. This is also the time when you think about whether or not the job is the best fit for you. Most companies will respond with a yes or no within a week or two, although some companies take even longer to respond (particularly if they are conducting interviews over an extended period of time. Some com panies, unfortunately, do not respond unless you are going to receive a job offer. If the company is still deciding between multiple applicants, you may even be asked back for another round of interviews. Remember that no interview is a waste of your time, even if you did not get the job or you decided it was not a good fit. Every interview offers an opportunity to practice your interview skills and to decide what types of jobs and organizations best fit your personality, interests, and skills.

After reading it, will people know the details of everything youve achieved? If so, its probably not working.I love to paint and Im extremely detailed and anal when I do it. If Im going to paint a piece of fruit, its going to have every single detail exactly right or Ill tie myself in knots trying (hence, I am constantly tied in knots) But Im taking a painting class right now that is transforming the way I paint and funnily enough, the lessons Im learning are the ones I teach my clients every day.The class is called How to Paint Fast, Loose and Bold and, as the title would suggest, its all about loosening up. Were being encouraged to paint with big brushes and to eliminate the details that are not important while choosing the ones that are. In this way, we can convey all the important information about our subject while keeping the pai nting fresh and interesting. This is exactly what I do when I write a resume, so I have no idea why it didnt occur to me before to do the same while paintingThe key to a successful resume and the thing most people get wrong is that its not supposed to be your life story. Its not supposed to tell people everything you did. Its not supposed to talk about every project you worked on, every responsibility you held, every technology you ever used, every language you ever programmed in if you try to convey all that, your reader will get lost in the weeds and your resume will be dull and long-winded. When things are going poorly, and your mind is flooded with negative thoughts, this can be a challenge.In these moments, think about your day and identify one positive thing that happened, no matter how small. If you cant think of something from the current day, reflect on the previous day or even the previous week. Or perhaps youre looking forward to an exciting event that you can focus your attention on.The point here is that you must have something positive that youre ready to shift your attention to when your thoughts turn negative.4. They disconnectGiven the importance of keeping stress intermittent, its easy to see how taking regular time off the grid can help keep your stress under control. When you make yourself available to your work 24/7, you expose yourself to a constant barrage of stressors.Forcing yourself offline and even - gulp - turning off your phone gives your body a break from a constant source of stress. Choose blocks of time where you cut the cord and go offline. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyperaroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior.The stress that caffeine creates is far from intermittent, as its long half-life ensures that it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body.6. They sleepIve beaten this one to death over the years and cant say enough about the importance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence and managing your stress levels. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, so that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when you dont get enough- or the right kind- of sleep.Sleep deprivation raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Stressful projects often make you feel as if you have no time to sleep, but taking the time to get a decent nights sleep is often the one thing keeping you from getting things under control.7. They squash negative self-talkA big step in managing stress involves stopping negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that - thoughts, not facts.When you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, its time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what youre doing and write down what youre thinking. Once youve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity.You can bet that your statements arent true any time you use words like never, worst, ever, etc. If your statements still look like facts once theyre on paper, take them to a friend or colleague you trust and see if he or she agrees with you. Then the truth will surely come out.When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brains natural threat tendency inflating the perceived frequency or severity of an event. Identifying and labeling your thoughts as thoughts by separating them from the facts will help you escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive new outlook.8. They reframe their perspectiveStress and worry are fueled by our own skewed perception of events. Its easy to think that unrealistic deadlines, unforgiving bosses, and out-of-control traffic are the reasons were so s tressed all the time.You cant control your circumstances, but you can control how you respond to them. So before you spend too much time dwelling on something, take a minute to put the situation in perspective.If you arent sure when you need to do this, try looking for clues that your anxiety may not be proportional to the stressor. If youre thinking in broad, sweeping statements such as Everything is going wrong or Nothing will work out, then you need to reframe the situation.A great way to correct this unproductive thought pattern is to list the specific things that actually are going wrong or not working out. Most likely you will come up with just some things- not everything- and the scope of these stressors will look much more limited than it initially appeared.9. They breatheThe easiest way to make stress intermittent lies in something that you have to do everyday anyway breathing. The practice of being in the moment with your breathing will begin to train your brain to focus s olely on the task at hand and get the stress monkey off your back.When youre feeling stressed, take a couple of minutes to focus on your breathing. Close the door, put away all other distractions, and just sit in a chair and breathe. The goal is to spend the entire time focused only on your breathing, which will prevent your mind from wandering.Think about how it feels to breathe in and out. This sounds simple, but its hard to do for more than a minute or two. Its all right if you get sidetracked by another thought this is sure to happen at the beginning, and you just need to bring your focus back to your breathing.If staying focused on your breathing proves to be a real struggle, try counting each breath in and out until you get to 20, and then start again from 1. Dont worry if you lose count you can always just start over.This task may seem too easy or even a little silly, but youll be surprised by how calm you feel afterward and how much easier it is to let go of distracting thou ghts that otherwise seem to have lodged permanently inside your brain.10. They use their support systemIts tempting, yet entirely ineffective, to attempt tackling everything by yourself. To be calm and productive, you need to recognize your weaknesses and ask for help when you need it. This means tapping into your support system when a situation is challenging enough for you to feel overwhelmed.Everyone has someone at work and/or outside work who is on their team, rooting for them, and ready to help them get the best from a difficult situation. Identify these individuals in your life and make an effort to seek their insight and assistance when you need it.Something as simple as talking about your worries will provide an outlet for your anxiety and stress and supply you with a new perspective on the situation. Most of the time, other people can see a solution that you cant because they are not as emotionally invested in the situation. Asking for help will mitigate your stress and str engthen your relationships with those you rely upon.Bringing it all togetherOverwhelming anxiety and empowerment are mutually exclusive. Its called the Creativity Age. The world has evolved from the Stone Age to the Agricultural Age to the Industrial Age to the Information Age to the Creativity Age. This era is relatively new. It began with the weiterverbreitung of the Internet and e-mail and has gained speed ever since with technologies that have connected people all over the world and given people the opportunities to do things they could never have done before.The Creativity Age caused massive upheaval for many organizations and individuals and shut down many businesses. It certainly upended many peoples otherwise wonderful careers. It cut across national borders, shrunk the planet, and changed how organizations and individuals interact with each other. It also created enormous opportunities for people all over the worldand the crazy thing is its impact is only going to get bigger and bigger. The Creativity Age is here to stay.Where Paid-Work HappensIf youre going to earn a paycheck, its going to happen in one of a few ways. You will either work for a for-profit or a not-for-profit organization. You will either own a business or work for someone else. You will either manage the efforts of other people or you will not. You will either work with other people in an organization or you will work completely by yourself. Your work today and in the future is going to fall into one or more of those categories. We can break it down even further. Toss out your title and your industry and the size of your organization and your bonus and where you went to school. None of that stuff really matters. Regardless of the way in which you work, there are certain key elements that absolutely matter in the Creativity Age. Here are five of the fruchtwein important.Add ValueValue is anything that increases the chances that the other person will achieve what he or she wants to achieve. Regardless of your title or your income or the size of your organization or your industry, you have one critically important job to do today. That job is to add value. Every day you have to ask yourself, Today how am I going to create value for other people and deliver it as well as I can? This is not a fun little saying to post on your wall and smile about. You have to have a ferocious and committed drive to creating and delivering value every day This is the one and only way to survive and thrive in the Creativity Age.The job of today is not the heavy lifting of the 1800s or the gathering of information of the 1970s. The job is purely to create value and deliver it to other people. You might be creating and delivering value to your team members who are part of a huge organizational effort. You might be on the front-line with your customers. You might be running a training session or deciding who to hire or serving as an engineer on a new product development or working in a not-for-profit organization focused on delivering food to the needy or teaching elementary school kids or deciding on the strategic direction of a Fortune 100 company.It doesnt matter what your role is or where you work. What does matter, and it matters a lot, is that you step back from your activities and ask yourself, What can I do or make that would be of greater value for these people? This is the first step to working successfully in the Creativity Age.If you are unemployed or are looking to work at a different organization, answer the same question. The creative person looks to create new value by observing other people in action, listening to their thoughts, reading their stories, and combining the ideas into new products and services. The great advantage of today is you can observe what is happening anywhere in the world via the internet, you can listen to what people have to say from anywhere in the world via Google.com and Bing.com, you can read any book or magazine in an instant on an iPad or Kindle or Nook, and you can combine an incredible array of products and services and ideas that already exist into something that is new and is of great value for other people. These four skills (observing, listening, reading, and combining) make up the generator of creativity. And theyre free Use them every day.Care Immensely ab out What You DoI had lunch with my mom yesterday. When I drove her back to her condominium, we paused in the parking lot. She pointed to a group of men who had raked and swept a giant pile of leaves together. They were putting the leaves into a giant mulching machine. She said, Those men care about their work. Look how clean the parking lots are. Im going to go tell them what a great job they are doing.In the Creativity Age every detail matters a lot. Regardless of where you live you are competing with other talented people all over the world. No country has an insurmountable advantage over another. Its an open game of competition. Consequently, the key is to create and deliver as much value as you can every day. Ultimately, it comes down to caring enormously about what you do.Where can you learn to care?Think about your closest family members, your best friends, the people you admire the most. Describe how you care about them. Write it down. Then apply that level of caring to the w ork you do every day.Go to a distributionspolitik you admire a restaurant, a store, a barbershop or beauty salon, or a favorite vacation destination. Study how the people who work there care about their customers. Write down what you see.Fix in your mind how you will apply some of those approaches in your work.Tomorrow at work care more than you have ever cared before. Take caring about the details of your work to the highest level that you have ever done. Then when you go in to work the day after tomorrow care more than you did the day before. Dont obsess over your bonus or your title. Just care about everything you do and you will find yourself doing it as well as you possibly can.Connect to a PurposeThe people that I know who are riveted with a purpose in their professional lives are the ones who care the most about every detail. They see their work as merely the mechanism for fulfilling a greatly engrained purpose. You have to know why you do what you do. There are only three gr eat sources of passion that I know of. You either have to love what you do, love who you do it for, or both.Some people love the work they do. They love building teams or they love making something that no one thought was possible or they love some aspect of their work. Some people dont love what they do, but they love who they do it for. They are helping to send a child to college or helping a child who has been mentally or physically challenged or being there for an aging parent. They love the person so much they are driven to do their best work every day.Fit within a Larger PictureIn the Creativity Age no one works in a silo. We are all connected to other people in our work. Even if you run a one-person business, your efforts are still interlinked with the work of other people. How does the value you create and deliver today fit within the larger picture of your organization, your community, or the worlds market place? Working hard on the details of a project is only of real valu e if it helps other people to achieve what they want to achieve.Those are five of the critical keys for working successfully in the Creativity Age. In many ways, these are the same keys to a successful career that were true in earlier ages. However, back in those days you could count on getting a job in an organization and keeping it for the rest of your career. You could count on competition being limited to your geographical area. Those parameters no longer exist. Now more than ever before you have to constantly be creative in finding ways to add more value to other people.
